YOU & YOUR WEDDING
March 2006

A ~ Z OF ROMANTIC TRAVEL

AUSTRALIA

Australia gets cooler by the minute with W Hotel in Sydney, The Marque in Melbourne and Empire Retreat in Western Australia. Austravel's aptly names Cool Collection (0870 166 2070, www.austravel.com) features everything you need for a trendy honeymoon Down Under. And hip Aussie swimwear label Sunseeker (www.sunseekerswimwear.com), just launched in the UK, is a honeymoon essential.

BROWN'S

Designer Olga Polizzi has worked her magic on the newly reopened Brown's (020 7493 6020, www.brownshotel.com) in London. This hallowed hideaway offers a Two's Company at Brown's package from ₤1100, which includes vintage champagne on arrival, a three-course dinner served in your deluxe suite and spa treatments.

CHINA

China is racing ahead in the contemporary hotel market. We love the amazing boutique hotel cum architectural museum Commune by the Great Wall (www.kempinski.com) near Bejing and the new Banyan Tree Lijang (www.banyantree.com) in the majestic hills and lush landscape of the Yunnan Province, which opens its doors in April 2006.

DAR LES CIGOGNES

Marrakesh is a treasure trove of boutique hotels and romantic riads, but one of the best by far is Dar Les Cigognes (00212 44 38 27 40, www.lescigognes.com), meaning House of Storks. Opposite the gates to the royal Palace, this former merchant's home has been transformed by celebrity architect Charles Boccara into an oasis of Moroccan chic with just 11 bedrooms, a dining room and rooftop terrace, hammam and spa not-to-be-missed boutique shop, though the famed souks are just a short walk away. Rooms from ₤115.

EDEN ROCK

Eden Rock (www.edenrockhotel.com) on the French West Indian island of St Barts has long been a mecca for A-listers as well as honeymooners splashing out on a glamour-filled getaway. It has just reopened after major refurbishments, making it even more delicious, and our favorite room is the Howard Hughes suite. Caribtours (020 7751 0660, www.caribtours.co.uk) offers seven nights in the Howard Hughes suite from ₤4265 per person, including breakfast, flights and transfers.

FLOATING CHAPEL

Florida's first floating chapel (ww.weddingsonwater.com) is now open for ceremonies off the coast of Clearwater. This million-dollar venue holds up to 125 people and can reach speeds of seven knots an hour. Ceremonies cost from ₤325 and are conducted by a captain in dress whites.

GOLD

Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi is a wow stopover en route to the Far East. The hotel's golden colors complement the sands of the Arabian Desert and the building is home to the biggest dome in the world with the light of more than 1000 chandeliers reflected in square miles of gold leaf. ITC Classics (01244 355527, www.itclassics.co.uk) offers seven nights at the Emirates Palace from ₤1390 per person, including breakfast, flights and transfers.

HALF-PRICE-BRIDES

Honeymoon at the five-star Beau Rivage Resort (www.naiade.com) in Mauritius before April 2007 and the bride will receive a 50% discount on her stay. Seasons in Style (01244 202000, www.seasoninstyle.co.uk) offers seven nights half-board from ₤1340 for the groom and ₤1025 for the bride, including flights, transfers, one gala meal, fruit basket and bottle of sprinkling wine.

IN THE KNOW

Bagging a honeymoon suite in Paris with its own lavender-bedecked terrace is some feat. Radisson SAS Hotel Champs-Elysées (0033 1 53 23 43 43, www.radissonsas.com) comes up trumps with Room 704, which costs ₤440 per night.

KISSES

Kisskiss lipstick in Mango, ₤15, Guerlain (01932 233909). Couples honeymooning in Paris should take a trip to the stunning new Guerlain showroom at 68 Avenue des Champs-Elysées with its beauty salon above.

LOVE ISLANDS

Private islands are just the most indulgent way possible to honeymoon. How about Richard Branson's Necker Island (ww.virginlimitededition.co.uk) in the British Virgin Islands, which you can hire for your exclusive use or book an individual room in the house, or Frégate Island Private (www.fregate.com) in the Seychelles? You'll never want to leave celebrity bolthole Parrot Cay (www.parrotcay.com.bz/) in Turks & Caicos, while Jumby Bay (www.jumbybayresort.com), a tiny one-resort island off the coast of Antigua in the Caribbean, is a heavenly destination, as is the design-led Huvafen fushi (www.huvafenfushi.com) in the Maldives.

MALLORCA

Mallorca has undergone something of a renaissance with designer places to eat, drink and sleep scattered around Palma's old town. The Puro hotel (00800 3746 8357, www.designhotels.com) is no exception. This divinely converted 14th century palace hotel in the former fish market district has 26 rooms, most overlooking the natural stone courtyard. Double rooms from ₤135 per night.

NTWALA ISLAND LODGE

Only eight guests can stay at any one time at the amazing new Ntwala Island Lodge (020 8566 4520) in Namibia. After a day spent watching the wildlife at Chobe National Park, honeymooners can relax in a stilted suite with plunge pool and deck all to themselves.

ONE DEVONSHIRE GARDENS

Glasgow's top hotel, One Devonshire Gardens (0141 339 2001, www.onedevonshiregardens.com), has just opened its Mews Suite. This ₤1000-a-night pad is accessed via a secret doorway and is being billed as Scotland's super-suite with a French cradle bed and its own private garden.

PRIVATE POOLS

Book a superior bungalow at The Blue Palace, Crete, and indulge in your very own infinity pool overlooking the gulf of Mirabello and the island of Spinalonga with its medieval fortifications. Essential Escapes (020 7284 3344, www.essentialescapes.com) offers seven nights at the Blue Palace from ₤1010 per person, including breakfast, flights and private transfers.

QUITE DELIGHTFUL

Butlers may be two-a-penny these days as five-star standards rocket, but honeymooners checking in to the ₤14,000 a night penthouse at the Setai (001 305 520 6000, www.setai.com) in Miami will have Audrey Marston, former deputy yeoman at Buckingham Palace, taking care of their every whim.

RAYAVADEE

The Wedding Bliss Experience at The Grotto at Rayavadee (www.rayavadee.com) in Krabi, Thailand, promises to be an elegant affair. Prices start from ₤1364, including the ceremony, an upgrade to a Spa Pavilion and a heavenly spa treatment for two.

SPAS

Mandarin Oriental Resorts (www.mandarinoriental.com) are home to some of the world's best spas, including the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok (pictured), which features the new Oriental Harmony treatment - a four-handed scrub and massage followed by a blissful simultaneous head and footage massage.

TRANSATLANTIC

Honeymooning in New York will always be hip, so fly to Manhattan on the all-business-class- airline Eos (www.eosairlines.com) and check in to the cutting-edge Chambers (www.designhotels.com), just off 5th Avenue at 56th Street. Prices start from ₤ 196 per room and you can choose to dine at the hotel's Town restaurant or feast on your in-room chocolate pretzels. New York - we love it!

UMBRIA

Rossana Sapori of Weddings in Umbria (www.weddingsinumbria.com) can make your dream Italian wedding come true in one of the region's beautiful towns, including Orvieto, Todi, Assisi and Gubbio, organizing everything from your dress to a traditional wedding breakfast.

VILLAZZO

High-end villas with all the services of a luxury hotel are what new company Villazzo (www.villazzo.com) is all about. Essentially your very own five-star resort, these extravagant villas in St Tropez, Marbella, Miami and Aspen are prefect for wedding parties. The three-story Villa Village in St Tropez (pictured) has six bedrooms, a pool house and costs from ₤32,500 per week.

WEDDING LIST

For the couple who has everything, a honeymoon gift list is a great idea with money to put towards upgrades and treats. Check out Scott Dunn (020 8682 5095), Abercrombie & Kent (0845 070 0610), Turquoise Holidays (0870 750 5711) and Bales Worldwide (0870 241 3212).

XENONA

We've all heard of French gites and Moroccan riads, now it's Greek xenonas, tastefully restored buildings made into chic inns, that are in vogue. Katikies in Oia on the stunning island of Santorini is one of the best. Mediterranean Experience (020 7821 4000, www.themed.net) offers seven nights from ₤1226 per person, including champagne American breakfast, flights and private transfers.

YACUTINGA LODGE

Experience the Argentine rainforest from the beautiful Yacutinga Lodge, set alongside the Iguazu River. Organic, tribal guest rooms feature an open-plan bathroom and private verandah. Exsus (020 7292 5050, www.exsus.com) offers three nights full-board from ₤305 per person, including activities.
