THE PINNACLE OF HIGH END

Villazzo brings five-star hotel service to private-home rentals.

Villazzo Founder and CEO Christian Jagodzinski has a knack for identifying a good business opportunity. He started the world's first online bookstore in his native Germany in 1991, and what he did with the wealth he amassed by selling the company to Amazon.com in 1998 allowed him to identify a void in the luxury lodging market.

Jagodzinski stopped working in 1999 - at the ripe old age of 30 - and traveled all over the world. He stayed in both luxury hotels and villas. Though he greatly enjoyed the five-star hotel experience, he was stunned by the lack of service standards in the villa-rental market. Some "high-end" private properties he rented didn't even have a phone line.

To right this wrong, Jagodzinski started Villazzo, a villa vacation rental service. And for the few destinations lucky enough to have homes in Villazzo's villa-rental portfolio which now includes Aspen - Jagodzinski has upped standards in a big way.

"Our goal is to replicate the best hotel you have stayed in, in a private home," he says. And he means it. To become a Villazzo rental, homes must meet rigid selection criteria - a maximum of ten homes will be selected in Aspen - but it's once a home makes the cut that things get high end.

Villazzo employs a full hotel staff in each of its locations (Aspen; St Tropez; Miami; and Marbella, Spain). Among others, the staff is not on-site - that would undo one of a villa's main draws, its inherent privacy - but house phones make all services available via one-touch dailaing. "Room service' exists in the form of menus from all restaurants in town. Orders can be placed through the concierge, who will deliver the meal within 45 to 60 minutes.
Every hotel-like detail, from hangers to hairdryers to towels and linens and shampoos, is added to the home, as is a full bar and a large selection of fine wine.

Just how far will Villazzo go to replicate the hotel experience? They'll even set up a gift shop in the house. For info: www.villazzo.com
